Mary, Mother of Perseverance

What the woman who stayed teaches the rest of us about remaining.

Fr. Daniel OseiContributor · Sep 5, 2026 · 8 min

Mary is often pictured in the bright moments: the Annunciation, the Magnificat, the crowning. But her longest posture is quieter. She stayed. At the foot of the cross, when staying cost everything, she remained.

Perseverance is rarely dramatic. It looks like showing up to Mass tired. Praying the rosary badly but praying it. Forgiving the same person again. Mary's yes at Nazareth became a thousand small yeses across a lifetime.

If you are in a season of simply remaining, you are in her company. Ask her for the grace of the next step, not the whole road. That is usually how she gives it.
